"Rights" provides a defense team for 14 protesters in Maysan threatened with 15 years in presentment on Wednesday

  16/03/2019 08:03         Statement         460

The Rights Center for Freedom of Expression Support asks the Council of the District Al- Majar Al- Kabeer in Maysan, to withdraw the lawsuits against the demonstrators scheduled to be trial on 20 of this month, the Criminal Court of Hungary, because they were doing the same demonstrations that happened in south provinces last summer.
At a time when the Rights Center refuses to drag citizens who have come out in peaceful demonstrations to demand their legitimate rights, to the court of justice in accordance with complaints related to the destruction of state and its security, so the Center trusts the fairness of the Iraqi judiciary in dealing with that lawsuit to achieve the right.
The Rights Center calls on the Governor of Maysan Ali Douai to immediately instruct to Al- Majar Al- kabeer Council to withdraw their cases against 14 judicial demonstrators whose cases have been turned to the criminal court, the Center is preparing the incident as a "dangerous precedent," aimed at undermining people who express their views in a civilized and constitutional way.
The Center pledges to provide a defense team for the 14 demonstrators in the district of Al-Majar al-Kabeer in Maysan province to refute the claims of the Majar al-Kabir District Council.
The 14 demonstrators are accused under Article 342 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which states:
(Anyone who intentionally sets fire to movable or immovable property, even if it is owned by him, if that would endanger the lives of the people or their property shall be punished by imprisonment for a term not exceeding 15 years.)
Sadiq Shae’e, one of the 14 protesters registered with their rights, was sued by the Majar al-Kabir District Council in Maysan province for a Rights Center, “That he and his 13 fellow demonstrators were brought to court after a peaceful one-hour demonstration in the summer of last year. We were arrested without a warrant and stayed in prison for 17 days”
The court decided to leave bail secured by 6 persons for 60 million Iraqi dinars, noting that they told him that the case was closed but was surprised by the notification of the Majar al-Kabir Misdemeanor Court a new date for trial, Shae’e added that.
